Beni Suef University, headed by Dr. Tarek Ali, Acting President of the University, has begun organizing awareness week activities for the "Tamkeen" presidential initiative, under the patronage of Dr. Ayman Ashour, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, to integrate people with special needs into the university community. The week's activities will continue until Thursday, October 30.
Dr. Tarek Ali emphasized that the presidential initiative "Tamkeen" represents a vivid embodiment of the Egyptian state's belief in the capabilities of its people with disabilities and its determination to achieve comprehensive integration. It also reflects the ongoing national efforts to achieve empowerment and integration within higher education institutions. He pointed out that Beni Suef University adopts the philosophy of comprehensive design for education and boasts a distinguished center for serving students with disabilities, in partnership with the Faculty of Special Needs Sciences, the first of its kind in Egypt and the Arab world in this field.
The university president added that the university is unique in holding an annual graduation ceremony for its graduates with disabilities, in appreciation of their efforts and achievements and in recognition of the role of their families, who represent the "unknown soldier" in supporting and empowering their children.
The awareness week activities of the "Tamkeen" presidential initiative are being held under the supervision of Dr. Abu Al-Hassan Abdel Mawgoud, Vice President for Community Service and Environmental Development, Dr. Heba Abu Al-Nil, Dean of the Faculty of Special Needs Sciences, and Dr. Haitham Nagi Abdel Hakim, Vice Dean for Community Service and Director of the Center for Student Services with Disabilities.
The first of these events began with an introductory seminar titled "Hearing-Visual Impairment: Understanding, Rights, and Empowerment," organized by the Center for Student Services with Disabilities and the Faculty of Special Needs Sciences, in cooperation with Hope City Foundation. Dr. Amal Ezzat, a psychological and educational consultant, and a specialist in cerebral visual impairment and speech therapy, presented the seminar, which addressed the definition of hearing-visual impairment as one of the thirteen disabilities stipulated in Egyptian Law No. 10 of 2018. The seminar discussed the rights of people with disabilities to proper scientific diagnosis and assessment, communication, orientation, and movement in a safe environment, inclusive education, and the relationship between hearing-visual impairment and Usher syndrome, as well as assistive technology that enables them to fully interact with society.
