Dr. Tarek Ali, Acting President of Beni Suef University, announced the success of the Neurology Department at Beni Suef University Hospitals in treating several patients with Guillain-Barré syndrome, a rare condition affecting approximately one in 50,000 people. This success is part of the ongoing efforts of the university hospitals, under the supervision of Dr. Hani Hamed, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the hospitals, Dr. Emad El-Banna, Executive Director of the hospitals, and Dr. Rasha Hassan, Head of the Neurology Department. These efforts aim to provide the necessary medical care for patients.
The university president explained that the neurology department at Beni Suef University Hospitals received a patient in her seventies suffering from Guillain-Barré syndrome, which caused peripheral neuropathy and blood pressure problems. She underwent three plasma exchange sessions since her admission. Although there is no cure for the disease, early treatment at the hospital, including intravenous immunoglobulin therapy or plasma exchange, has accelerated the recovery of symptoms. In plasma exchange, plasma rich in harmful antibodies is removed and replaced with other fluids.
Dr. Tarek Ali confirmed that the medical team is constantly working to prevent blood clots, in addition to initiating early physical therapy to aid the patient's recovery. Treatment may require the use of feeding tubes or respiratory support if the respiratory muscles are affected, necessitating the use of a ventilator. He also noted that the university hospitals received a similar case last January, which received the necessary treatment and was monitored to prevent any further complications.
Dr. Hani Hamed explained that the doctors—Dr. Rana Gomaa, Dr. Abdel Rahman Shaaban, Dr. Manar Mohamed, Dr. Israa Mubarak, and Dr. Ghada Ibrahim—received the patient and implemented all necessary protocols to provide the required care for such rare cases. He also emphasized the importance of providing specialized medical care for Guillain-Barré syndrome patients in university hospitals due to the complexity and sensitivity of the condition. He stressed that these cases require a highly qualified and professional medical team capable of addressing the challenges associated with this rare disease. He further noted that providing appropriate care necessitates the collaboration of all members of the medical team to ensure the best possible outcomes for patients facing complex health conditions.
For his part, Dr. Emad El-Banna, Executive Director of University Hospitals, expressed his sincere gratitude to the Head of the Neurology Department, the medical staff, the nursing staff, and all employees of the department for their tremendous efforts and unwavering commitment to providing the necessary healthcare to patients. He emphasized that this endeavor requires significant effort and reflects the hospitals' dedication to delivering the highest standards of care. He also highlighted the importance of collaboration among all members of the medical team to ensure patient stability and provide the necessary support throughout their treatment.
